SpinRite v6.0 questions
Here is the text of a message that I sent to support@grc.com nearly three weeks ago, on 7/15. I received no actual reply. When I mentioned this to the author of the 'nice review of SpinRite 6', Howard Carson, (Thanks!) he directed me to the newsgroups here. (Yes, it was a text-only message I had originally sent). If anyone can answer any of these questions, I'd greatly appreciate it. I did figure out #1, but the rest are still up in the air, especially #5. Spinrite V6.0 upgrade
I have tried Spinrite v6.0 iso build. on 5 different machines from win2k, XP, mandrake linux, pclinux os and a multitude of different CD burners on both Linux and windows. I have created the iso a number of times. Some just fail, others will burn but the burned image is unbootable. Further, why is there no md5sum ? The floppy works but as many machines now don't have a floppy. just a CD-RW, it isn't much good on them. Folks, First, just so that no one is confused by reading this note, SpinRite v6.0 DOES NOT YET EXIST and is still several months away from existing. Anyone who purchases SpinRite v5.0 any time from the second half of this year on, will always be able to upgrade to SpinRite v6.0 for no charge. Since our online purchasing system went live at the beginning of July (exactly mid-year), any SpinRite v5.0 owners in the purchasing system will be entitled to upgrade to the next version of SpinRite online and without charge. Is Spinrite for Me?
I have a 4-year old Dell laptop running W2K. I was running the program called 'Eraser' to clean up free space on my boot drive when the hard drive started making noises and a blue screen came up stating that Windows had suffered an abnormal shut down. Subsequent tries to reboot using Safe Mode, Restore to Last Good Configuration' and the like failed, as each time Windows got to the Logon screen it would freeze and state that the Netlogon file was not on the machine. SpinRite V6 not working?
I bought SpinRite V6 to fix some problems on a disk and it couldn't even identify them, let alone fix them. I'm hoping I did something wrong and people can identify my error, so I will describe my system, problem and results. If not, I will return the software. System ABit BH6 with 850 MHz Coppermine (no overclocking) 768MB memory 80GB 7200RPM drive on IDE Master 1 CDRW on IDE Master 2 SIIG Ultra ATA133 card (inserts in BIOS so disks are accessible from DOS and even with a Linus boot floppy I have) 250MB Maxtor (forget the model), on the ATA card Win..

I have a drive that has just died. I have tried other methods of recovery, Norton, Get Data Back.. I have had no luck with ant of these products. Has anyone use Spinrite to recover a dead drive?? IF so let me kow what the scoop is. Thanks 'Dead' as in it won't spin or what? If the drive is physically non-responsive or the controller is bad, your only hope is a data recovery outfit. Can somebody in this group tell me how to get to the spinrite newsgroup. I have set my newsreader (Agent) to news.grc.com and entered a user name and password that are identical. I've found a problem in the design of the program I have 1457669 byte high density flopies that are part of a spaned disk pk zip backup that have developed bad sectors. Your program reports to me that the data is recoverable however due to the fact every allocatable sector is in use and is filled to capasity there is no place for the recovered data to be moved to when it goes to mark that marginal failing sector as being unuseable in the fat. My Hard drive is connected to IDE 3 which is controlled by highpoint 370 raid controller but I don't have a raid set up.
